ABOUT MICHAEL I. DAYS
His impact stretched far beyond the newsroom with his passion for mentorship and heart for his community. He was one of the founders of NABJ-Philadelphia and its first president.
Days accepted the NABJ President’s Award presented to the organization in its first year of operation in 2024.
In his honor, this scholarship will reward two students who show a strong interest and track record in pursuing journalism, regardless of beat or discipline (print, broadcast, or digital).
The winners will receive $2,000 each, a mentorship and a free student membership to NABJ-Philadelphia.
Winners will be presented at the NABJ Region 1 Conference on May 1-2, 2026.
criteria
Required Submissions
- Be current NABJ members who are rising college sophomores, juniors, seniors or graduate students from the Philadelphia area, enrolled full time in good standing at an accredited U.S. college or university, and have at least one full year of school remaining at the time of the application. - Reside in Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester or Delaware Counties, South Jersey – from Mercer County south – and the state of Delaware.
- Have a demonstrated interest in journalism.

Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale) verified by an official transcript.
NOTE: If selected, failure to maintain the noted criteria will result in the winner returning the scholarship funds.
- Submit a 250-word essay or a video (2 mins or less) on the subject: “What do you think you will contribute to the field of journalism?”
- Submit three journalism samples, i.e. writing, video, visual portfolio, graphic design, podcast, audio, editing or other platform of your work, preferably via links.
- Demonstrate community service and involvement.
- Submit a resume (one page maximum).
- Submit a list three references and their contact info.
- Submit a list of personal social media sites and handles, and professional website, if available.
- Please include anything else you would like for the Selection Committee to consider.
